With supervision, the Customs Compliance Specialist will assist in identifying opportunities for cost-effective improvements and areas of opportunity through experience and data analysis; provide training to cross-functional groups to enhance the overall company knowledge and understanding of customs issues; create and maintain internal and external metrics which assist the organization to identify successes and opportunities for improvement.  Work with customs broker to ensure proper clearance for shipments, while maintaining a customs compliance program for the organization.


  • Request or compile necessary import and export documentation, such as commercial invoices, certificates of origin, and cargo-control documents
  • Advise and assist with import and export restrictions, tariff classifications, antidumping applicability, FTA qualification and solicitation, country of origin marking requirements, or other customs-related matters, in accordance to customs regulations, laws or procedures
  • Stay abreast of changes in import or export laws or regulations by reading current literature, attending meetings or conferences, working with brokers, and conferring with colleagues
  • Assist and monitor custom brokers/carriers clearance of goods through customs and to their destinations
  • Ensure customs compliance within the company by actively providing training and customs-related updates
  • Assist in transportation, warehousing, or product distribution of imported or exported products
  • Analyze duty drawback for potential savings and filing of claims
  • Creating metrics for internal compliance and spend control
  • Monitoring brokers and carriers performance as related to key metrics
  • Assist cross-functional teams in enhancing knowledge and use of Customs tools and methods
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to support business changes or special projects


Bachelor’s Degree in a related field with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a customs compliance role; or equivalent work experience to commensurate.


Essential Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Understanding of NAFTA, Duty Drawback, and HTS codes
  • Understanding of all custom documentation requirements
  • Understanding of Title 19 of the Federal Code of Regulations
  • Knowledge of domestic and international freight requirements
  • Ability to be results-driven and self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple competing deadlines.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and summarize data.
  • Ability to make suggestions to improve processes and annual metrics.
  • Skill with Microsoft Office products. Must have data management knowledge including working in databases and spreadsheets (i.e., Access and Excel).
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment to perform essential duties
  • Ability to develop instructions and guidelines to perform functions of the job as necessary
